If you enjoyed my essay on Michael Mann’s great movie Manhunter, you might be interested to learn that a new, remastered, 4K cut of the film has been made. Called Manhunter: The Final Cut, the film will have a limited release in cinemas starting on July 4, 2026 in the U.S. and on September 25 in the U.K.
So, if you live near a theater that sometimes shows re-releases of classic films, keep your eye it. It’s a great film, and everyone should get a chance to see it on the big screen (as I did, lo those forty years ago).

Downloaded and watched the original last week. I saw it on HBO back in the latchkey days, and it holds up: it’s still my favorite treatment of Thomas Harris, honestly I’m kind of done with serial killer things but this one is great. I love Miami Vice too, that whole aesthetic is great.

Yeah, it’s the best Harris adaptation by far, imho.

It’s got style. The Silence of the Lambs is good, but for those of us who enjoyed a certain time period, Michael Mann was the king of style. And somehow Manhunter is darker and nastier; I think it’s ‘cause Will Graham is only a hairsbreadth removed from being insane himself.
